Greeneville Teen Wins 11th Annual Baileyton Celebration 5K Road Race

Cooler temperatures than in past years -- it was in the low 80s instead
of the mid-90s at race time -- greeted the 54 participants in the 11th
annual Baileyton Celebration 5K Road Race on Saturday, September 6. The
race, that began near the Greene County Bank on the Van Hill Road, took
the runners throughout downtown Baileyton before finishing in front of
the City Hall.

Ben Wills, 16, of Greeneville was the overall winner. Wills led from the
start and held on to his lead to capture the victory in 18:13. Sidney
Repp, also 16, of Jefferson City was second in 18:32. Nick Whited, 25,
of Raven, VA, finished third in 18:51. The top masters honors went to
Larry Beth, 55, of Kingsport in 20:10.

Phil Roberts of Greeneville holds the course record of 15:04, set in
1993 at the first Celebration 5K.

In the women's division, Allison Pastorek, 26, of Jonesborough took the
top award. Pastorek, who was 12th overall, finished in 21:00. Katie
Williams, 17, of Elizabethton finished second in 21:44, while Rachel
Monderer, 41, of Johnson City took the female masters title and was the
third female overall in 23:10 .

The womenís course record of 20:47 was set in 1994 by Nancy Churchwell
of Baileyton.

The race, that is sponsored by the Greene County Bank, is part of the
four-day Baileyton Celebration, which is held on the grounds of the
Baileyton Elementary School. The Celebration includes a beauty pageant,
a cruise-in, a parade, arts and crafts and food booths, childrenís
games, a worship service, and continuous entertainment on the main
stage.
